The videos are based on authentic, deeply personal letters, collected from institutions across the country, written by individuals who are serving time. Set against compelling images of incarcerated young adults, excerpts that convey the shattering consequences of confinement are read aloud.
Violence and Gangs examines misguided thinking about gangs and violence, revealing the contrast between the perceived value of gang life and the reality of prison life. The writers share their painful personal experiences with the false promises of gangs. Substance Abuse progresses from portraying the stark reality of prison life to exploring the relationship between substance abuse, suffering, and incarceration. In a particularly gripping segment, viewers watch a young woman in the agony of withdrawal; the letter read aloud wonders why her life is filled with such pain. Doing Time expresses the overwhelming experience of being in prison, giving the viewer insight into the stifling feeling of being "caged in." This series paints a compelling portrait of the criminal justice system seen through the eyes of those who know it firsthand.
